70年代末，英国有一支乐队叫Buggles，他们和许多短命乐队一样，只出版过一张唱片便不知去向。但是，他们却写出一首任何回顾20世纪流行文化的人都不能回避的歌曲《录像带杀死广播歌星》(Video Killed The Radio Star)。这首听上去有些俏皮并带有明显电子合成器风格的歌曲1979年出版后并没有引起人们注意。但一年后，MTV电视台开播，并非常恰当地把它作为台歌，人们才从中感受到它的象征意义。这首歌后来被赋予的含义远远超过它本身，成为广播音乐文化和电视音乐文化的分界标志。MTV的出现，彻底改变了人们通过广播电台收听音乐的习惯，它让人们牢牢坐在电视机前，感受MTV带来的视觉和听觉双重享受。并且，它给艺人带来的宣传效果远远超过广播电台，电台听众也被MTV抢走不少。“录像带杀死广播歌星”一时也成为传媒界的有趣现象。
